Tongyeong

May 5th was Children’s Day, a national holiday, and having Monday off as well I decided to take off for the long weekend.

I chose Tongyeong, a relatively small port city in the South Gyeongsang Province…but I didn’t expect a world triathlon event being held there that weekend. All motels and hotels were sold out within a 20 mile radius, so I slept at a public sauna my first night. By “slept”, I mean I laid down on the floor in a room shared with a good hundred other people, mostly families.

Needless to say, I woke up early. I jumped in some hot tubs and then left the jimjilbang to take a walk around the fish market.

Then I hopped on a ferry to Somaemul Island, better known for the the small Deungdae Island that lies right next to it. Deungdae Island is so small it only takes 20 minutes to walk around but it has a nice white lighthouse, courtesy of the Japanese during the colonial period.

I had planned on spending the night on Somaemuldo, but having hiked around it in a matter of hours, I decided to head back to Tongyeong. I stayed in a motel by the harbor, and the next day had much better weather.

Admiral Yi Sun Shin was a Korean naval commander, famous for using the turtle ships and his victories against the Japanese navies at the end of the 16th century.
